TRAVEL TIPS

  • Entrance Fees: Patan Durbar Square and Godawari Garden charge small entry fees (cash).
  • Best Seasons: Spring (Mar–May) and Autumn (Oct–Dec) for pleasant weather and clear skies.
  • Footwear: Wear comfortable walking shoes—Durbar Square and the gardens involve some walking.

In a single day, this journey moves from stone temples and bronze deities in Patan to forest shrines and floral tranquility in Godawari—capturing Lalitpur’s progression from sacred art to serene nature, the twin soul of Nepal’s “City of Fine Arts.”

Itinerary

Leave after an early breakfast to avoid traffic. Drive time to Central Lalitpur (Patan Durbar Square) is about 30–40 minutes.

The artistic heart of Lalitpur—a UNESCO World Heritage Site—showcases Newar craftsmanship at its finest.

HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Krishna Mandir – an elegant 17th-century stone temple built in Shikhara style.
  • Hiranya Varna Mahavihar (Golden Temple) – a Buddhist monastery glowing with gilt bronze carvings.
  • Sundari Chowk & Mul Chowk – exquisite palace courtyards of the Malla era.
  • Patan Museum – one of South Asia’s most impressive collections of Hindu and Buddhist art.
  • Local artisan lanes – observe bronze sculptors, metalworkers, and paubha painters in traditional workshops.

Recommended break: Enjoy tea or breakfast at Cafe Swotha or Museum Café overlooking the square.

Continue about 9 km southeast (approx. 45 minutes) to the Bajra Barahi Temple, nestled in a serene grove in Chapagaun Village.

ABOUT THE SITE:

  • Dedicated to Bajra Barahi, a hybrid form of the goddess Barahi representing power and compassion.
  • Surrounded by a peaceful forest filled with birds and prayer flags.
  • The temple blends Buddhist and Hindu iconography, typical of Newar spiritual harmony.

Tip: The forest and nearby pond make this stop perfect for quiet reflection or casual photography.

The group can also opt to visit the Central Zoo at Jawalakhel instead of Bajra Barahi Temple in Chapagaun

  • Native Wildlife – You’ll find animals native to Nepal, including one-horned rhinos, bengal tigers, sloth bears, deer, leopards, and a range of reptiles.
  • Aviary & Birds Section – Colorful Himalayan pheasants, eagles, owls, and exotic parrots.
  • Recreation Area – There’s a small boating pond and plenty of shady spots for picnics.
  • Conservation Exhibits – Educational boards highlight Nepal’s biodiversity and ongoing preservation projects.

Head toward Godawari, enjoying a scenic drive through Lalitpur’s southern hills and fertile terraced fields.

SUGGESTED LUNCH SPOTS:

  • Godavari Village Resort (for local and continental cuisine)
  • Botanical Café near the garden gate (casual eats and fresh air dining)

The Godawari area lies about 5 km beyond Bajra Barahi and greets you with cool mountain air and botanical charm.

WHAT TO DO:

  • Explore botanical collections, including Himalayan orchids and fern houses.
  • Visit the Godawari springs, considered sacred and the source of local rivers.
  • Stroll through landscaped lawns and shaded forest trails—ideal for relaxation and bird-watching.
  • Optionally, visit nearby Phulchowki Base, the highest hill in the valley, if time allows.

Enjoy the scenic return drive, passing through traditional Newari settlements like Harishiddhi or Thecho, known for festivals and wood-carving workshops.
