TRAVEL TIPS

  • Buy the Bhaktapur entry ticket (valid for the whole core area).
  • Carry cash—most smaller shops don’t accept cards.
  • Comfortable walking shoes are a must; Bhaktapur’s brick lanes are uneven.
  • Respect temple areas—remove shoes before entering sanctuaries.
  • Ideal seasons: Autumn (Oct–Dec) and Spring (Mar–May) for best weather.
Itinerary

Drive east toward Bhaktapur (approx. 45 minutes). The valley morning is often clear—ideal for seeing the distant Himalayas along the route.

Start your day with a spiritual visit to Doleshwor Mahadev, believed to be the head of Kedarnath Mahadev from India’s Char Dham circuit.
HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Peaceful hilltop surroundings with panoramic valley views
  • Stone and metal sculptures depicting Shiva’s forms
  • Connection to the Mahabharata legend

Tip: Visit early before crowds arrive; mornings here are quiet and meditative.

Drive (~15 minutes) to Bhaktapur Durbar Square, one of the best-preserved royal precincts in Nepal and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
MUST-SEE PLACES:

  • 55 Window Palace – former royal residence showcasing fine woodcarving
  • Vatsala Temple and Golden Gate (Sun Dhoka) – exquisite Malla-period craftsmanship
  • Nyatapola Temple (Taumadhi Square) – Nepal’s tallest pagoda, dedicated to Siddhi Lakshmi
  • Bhairavnath Temple – guardian deity of Bhaktapur
  • Pottery Square – watch artisans making clay pots by hand
  • Dattatreya Square – explore its old monasteries and see the famous Peacock Window

LUNCH SUGGESTION:
ENJOY NEWARI CUISINE AT A TRADITIONAL COURTYARD RESTAURANT LIKE NYATAPOLA CAFÉ OR TAWAA EATERY, RIGHT ABOVE TAUMADHI SQUARE. TRY BARA, CHOILA, JUJU DHAU (CURD), AND LOCAL RICE BEER (AALOO KO ACHAR OPTIONAL!)

A short, scenic uphill drive (around 20–25 minutes) through farmland and traditional houses leads to the ancient ridge-top temple complex.

Perched on a forested hill, Changu Narayan is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and dates back to the 4th century CE, making it Nepal’s oldest known temple.
HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Main pagoda temple with intricate wood and stone carvings of Vishnu’s avatars
  • Sculpture gallery – ancient Lichchhavi-era stone inscriptions and statues
  • Small village shops and art studios showcasing traditional paubha paintings and woodwork

Tip: Walk around the entire temple complex; carvings on the outer walls are among the finest in the valley.

If time allows, take a short walk through Changu Village for panoramic valley views, or start your return journey to Kathmandu.
