Buddha Jayanti which is Buddha’s Birthday, also known as Buddha’s day of enlightenment – Buddha Purnima, Buddha Pournami is celebrated in most of East Asia and South Asia commemorating the birth of the Prince Siddhartha Gautama, later the Gautama Buddha. He was the founder of Buddhism.Buddha Jayanti is celebrated on the full moon day of May in Nepal.

The Lord Buddha was born in 623 BC in the sacred area of Lumbini. Buddha was born when his mother Mayadevi in ​​Lumbini, Nepal went to his maternal home in Devadaha. According to various Buddhist literatures, it is believed that Buddha was born with divine powers and talents, as he walked his seven steps at birth. Therefore, it is believed that Buddhism was advocated with the birth of Buddha.

Buddha Purnima is a supreme day for Buddhists as it is believed that three important events in the life of the Buddha took place on this day: his birth, attainment of enlightenment and death, Paranirvana. This day is known as the Thrice Blessed Festival. Moreover, the birth of Buddha is symbolized by Lotus and Bull. His first sermon is represented by the Bodhi tree and his Nirvana with a Stupa.

In a leap year, it may be celebrated in June. Therefore, it is primarily celebrated in the Baisakh month of the Buddhist calendar and the Bikram Sambat Hindu calendar.  This year, Buddha Jayanti is on Thursday, May 23, 2024.
